If you work in the media (TV/Radio/Newspaper/Magazine/Internet) and would like to request help for upcoming projects related to selective eating then please post in here.

Are YOU ready to tell your story? PLEASE READ

Postby kate » 05 Oct 2009, 10:55

1.Is your diet severely restricted?
2. Do you starve yourself during the day but binge at night, or even eat during the night?
3. Are you a health food junkie who panics at the thought of eating junk food?
If you can answer 'yes' to any of the above, I would love to hear from you. I'm a journalist with more than 20 years experience, writing a serious report about Selective Eating Disorder, Night Eating Syndrome and Orthorexia, for a monthly women's magazine. The aim is to simply raise awareness of these conditions (we believe many people are still suffering in silence) and offer ways to help. Contact me on the address/number below and I can assure you I will treat your story with great sensitivity and respect.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

my daughter has SED
the school had agreed to 'keep' a school meal for her....she gets free school dinners
but then they simply stopped doing it
and when I asked why they said they were not allowed to do it
but they HAD been doing it
if the food she eats is not available then she will not eat (unless her friends give her stuff out of their packed lunches)
school said school dinner staff are made aware of children with problems with food and will monitor from distance,
but when my child was given pasta which she does not eat and all she ate was 5 quality street sweets from a friend what did they do about that!
when all she had was one yorkshire and the chocolate off a pudding what did they do about that.....etc etc etc

school had letter from psychiatric social worker who used to come to house for family therapy (and who told me I was doing everything she would have told me to do)
then asked for letter from GP
then said needed letter from psychiatrist
got psychiatrist to see her who confirmed she had SED
now dinner staff are asking for letter from dietician

what help is there for children with SED
I have written to various people for help
psychiatric social worker saw her to make diagnosis then stopped. did not help her
psychiatrist give diagnosis and that was that
dietician saw her twice

my daughrter needs HELP to overcome this
children don't grow out of this

they help children who are FAT to eat healthy
so why not help children who are THIN eat healthy

I now have to take my daughter out of school at lunch times to feed her although she should get free school meals
it is not right

My son is 15 years old, and lives off the same food day in and day out, mainly bread, crisps, chips, He likes chocolate, We have tried
everything, occupational therapy, dietician, bowen therapy, When he went away skiing with school recently, he would go all day without food, as he
did not like the pack lunch so just had water, He just had bread and chips all the week. He will eat Mcdonalds chicken nuggets but no one elses. He does
like naan bread, plain only and poppodums, I think it must be the colour of food, Just need help. He knows he is like this and I have asked him will he ever eat normally but he says he doesn't know. Any suggestions welcome, will try anything. We do give him milk and lots of vitamins to make up for hit.

Hi, I only just found out that what I've been going through has a name. I think I have to point out however, that not all people who suffer from SED are thin. On the contrary I am obese. My problem is that I dont eat fruit and vegetables and I suffer from clinical depression so I overeat the bad things that I do eat. I truly beleived I MUST be the only person on earth with that peculiarity. I live in Jamaica (West Indies) and everywhere I look there are fruit trees. I'm looked at like an alien to live in jamaica and not eat fruits. It's not that I don't wish I could eat them- of course I want to be healthy just like the next person but just the thought makes me panic. I drive myself crazy wondering if I can ever be healthy and am convinced that my body will just give up one day soon. I suffer from other conditions that I think are either caused by not eating fruits and vegetables or could be greatly improved by doing so and even the fear of imminent death can't get me to change my lifestyle. If anyone has any suggestions they will be greatly apprecited.

to Fudge Cake
your weight is just one way to measure you .....it sounds ok to me
(remember most people nowadays are a lot fatter than they would have been years ago and so what would have been normal years ago is now seen as skinny)
you know what you eat so you know if it is basically healthy or not
you need to see your GP and ask for help
BUT let me tell you it is hard to get help
however it is the first step you must take
good luck to you
