scottish case study request

Postby ruthwalker » 10 Jun 2009, 12:59

I'm writing an article on fussy eaters for a Scottish newspaper and would like to speak to the parent of a child/ren with extreme eating habits, about the difficulties it raises and how they deal with it on a day to day basis. You can speak anonymously but it would be great if you were happy to be named and photographed. Please note: this is not about autistic issues, food allergies or anyone with deep underlying psychological issues. Thanks.

Hi there - this is obvsiously too late to be any use to you but I would be really interested to hear what you found out from your case study and to read the article you wrote.

My son has selective eating disorder. He is 7 years old and has been a "selective eater" since the age of 18 months. We have had very little help and found there is so little information available. The fussy eaters site makes me realise how many of these children there are and how frustrated the parents are. I have managed this very frustrating situation with "gut feel" and my son is bright, full of energy, sleeps well, sociable etc but we have not moved on at all in 5 years.

Typical meals
Breakfast - orange juice, frosties, toast with butter and marmalade
Lunch - Bread and butter, ready salted crisps, rice cakes, apple, grapes
Dinner - Bread (toast) and butter, ready salted crisps, rice cakes, apple, grapes

He only eats these fruits, no vegetables, meat, cheese, etc and more recently no yoghurt or milkshake. He will only eat certain brands (can tell the difference) and is frightened to try any new foods. If we go on holiday we have to take food and butter with us and we have to take a lunch bag to peoples houses and restaurants.

As he gets older the situation becomes more difficult. He says he thinks he will eat different foods eventually but he cannot see when and will not be persuaded with anything to try foods. We have had some success with giving him a plate of our food and asking him to cut it up and get it to his mouth (he does not have to try it) to ensure he has the skills to eat normally when he so chooses. This is all we are able to do.
