Hi - I have an 7 year old who can't try new things

Postby susiejc » 26 Mar 2010, 14:19

Hi. I've just joined this forum, and I'm so glad I've found it! My son is 7 years old, and has a very selective diet. He will only eat:

Fries to Go
McCain Smiles
Cheese
Eggs
Bread
Mashed potato (at a push).

He will eat chocolate, and one brand of cereal bars, and that is it. He won't eat any fruit or veg.

Its great to finally "meet" parents of children like my son, and to find out that I'm not the only one who struggles. Looking forward to taking part in discussions and sharing ideas?

This forum has really disturbed me as I thought I was alone with these problems!

My son is 6 and will eat

Chips
Smilies
Bernard mathews turkey Dinosaurs
Yorkshire puddings
DRY toast
Dry frosted shreddies
Thomas tank yogurts
Certain brand crisps/flavors
Bananas
Certain chocolates
Certain sweets

Lemonade
orange squash
water

He gets visably scared of *new* food, even junk food he does not recognise. Would love him to even eat a piece of birthday cake!
Health proffs don`t want to know as he is happy and of a *normal* height and weight tho he is on the skinnier side.

I`ve made yet another appointment with a heal visitor tomorow but they are reluctant to take my son on as he is 6 and the school nurse should be in charge of him....

I`m glad I have found this forum, even if it does not provide an *answer* at least it is of comfort knowing there are people out there in the same situation as us.

This sounds like our 6 year old!! He also loved Smilies, but was put off when they seemed to change the recipe or the style of preparation in the last year. He eats bread, waffles, pancakes (only the ones I make), Western Family brand chicken nuggets, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, saltine crackers, French fries, corn on the cob and milk. He has difficulty with taste and texture of foods. Since birth he would gag and vomit when he tried a new food. He also had other sensitivities to bright lights, loud sounds and he some tactile sensitivities (he doesn't like to get his hands gooey ie no fingerpainting! This led to a diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder. This was helpful to us, as it explained a lot, but it still hasn't helped us expand his diet! He has learned to cope with the lights/sounds but his diet is such a challenge! He has only just in the last month started eating pasta - and we have been putting pasta on his plate at dinner since he was a baby! For fruit and veggies, he still eats pureed baby food - only banana. I add pureed sweet potato, carrot, or squash, as that is the only veggie he will eat. I'm so glad to have found this site!
